On behalf of the entire Undergraduate Student Government of Baruch College, I would like to welcome you to Baruch for the 2010-2011 academic year. This special summer issue of The Tickershould prove to be a great preview to the exciting year ahead at our college.
When I was an incoming freshman getting ready for my first year at college, a large envelope with Baruch's logo arrived in my mailbox back home. I opened it to see a copy of The Ticker staring at me with an invitation to participate in all the wonderful activities and organizations that make up this college. Frankly, since it didn't involve going to the beach or a graduation party, I didn't much care for it in the middle of July. It sat on my desk for a couple weeks until one day, with nothing better to do, I reached over and opened it up.
What was inside? There were stories about students landing top internships, about energetic clubs that held huge events, about top political and business leaders paying Baruch a visit. There were articles about our professors and their trailblazing research and publications. There were the tales of our championship athletic teams. There was all of this and more.
In that one look, I knew that I made the right decision in coming to Baruch College. Even though I first stepped foot in the Vertical Campus not knowing a soul, I knew that this college was the place to be. Here I have met friends that will last a lifetime, professors that have changed the way I think, and opportunities that are impossible to beat. I made the right decision, and now you too have made the right decision.
As president of the student government, I have the honor and the privilege to represent you, and to be your voice to the administration and the community. USG is the student body's advocate in college's decision making process.
This year we plan on pushing for a Student Bill of Rights to affirm our collective priorities and needs as students. Over the course of the upcoming year, I invite you to help us draft and then pass this document. All voices need to be part of the discussion.
Additionally, we will be organizing fun and exciting events nearly every week all year long. In your days here, whenever you see the letters USG, that means Undergraduate Student Government, and that means that you are looking at a great event. We hope to see you at all of our free parties, lectures, concerts, and other exciting events.
Lastly, I would like to invite you to join us. Our plans are big and we need a big team to match them. I joined USG as a freshman, and it was the best thing I ever did at Baruch. You should do it too.
Email me at ben@usgbaruch.com to join our team. We look forward to this exciting year and hope to see you around.
Welcome again and good luck!
