In an effort to improve academic services for students, CUNY is implementing the Start Immersion Program, which is set to take off this semester.

According to Rita Rodin, CUNY will begin testing in the next few weeks for students who have been accepted for admission for the spring term. Rodin also reported that based on the results of theses assessment tests, students who need to prepare for the college level work have the opportunity to do so.

Courses within the immersion program are designed to help students bring their skills up to a proficiency level. Hostos and Borough of Manhattan Community College are the selected colleges to offer the program, providing students classes in math and writing.

According to a press release from CUNY Newswire, CUNY Start will provide 130 hours of instruction over a 13-week period, and students who complete the program are guaranteed acceptance into their preferred colleges at the start of the spring semester.

The program is ideally for freshmen applicants whose test sores and grades reflect a need for improvement before entering college. Chancellor Matthew Goldstein stated in the release that the primary goal of the immersion program

Mia Simon, director of special initiatives under the Office of Academic Affairs and Michael Arena, university director of University Relations were active in getting the program afoot, however, both were unavailable for comment.
